Sculpture of a certain person, absent
The object was input using a 3D scanner, and cut out with a plotter to make a sculpture that tries to distance itself as much as possible from any connection between materials and maker. This was a new venture for Tomotaka Yasui, who up to this point had expressed subjects such as tranquil spaces, and light, in sculptures using ancient craft techniques such as dry lacquering and mother-of-pearl inlay. The shoe christened “Left” no longer has its other shoe, or the wearer, and around this sculpture incorporating cubes of mother-of-pearl inlay, is a space suffused with vestiges of human presence and memory.
